How Soon Do Dents Have to Be Repaired?

Structural dents have to be repaired as soon as possible, especially if your vehicle cannot be driven. Some compound dents that involve torn or jagged sheet metal, pose a safety risk to pedestrians or anyone coming near your vehicle. Many state inspection laws require unsafe body damage to be repaired before the vehicle can be driven and depending on the extent of the damage, it may also be an offense that is subject to a summons, or at least a warning.

Soft dents are less critical, but If you have a new car, you probably take a great deal of pride in the new car appearance and want these defects fixed as soon as possible.

Go to a Professional. Even the slightest ” Soft” dent can become a major job. Modern vehicles are complicated, and even matching paint color is an art best left to a professional. That is why you should always “Go to the pro”.

Removing Dents in Your Car, Truck or SUV

Dents and scratches are unsightly and depreciate the value of your vehicle as well. Depending on the severity of the damage, this can also affect the safety and drivability of your vehicle. If you lease rather than own your vehicle, unless the damage falls within strict guidelines there may be a penalty due when the vehicle is turned in.

Dents fall into several categories, and each requires a unique approach to repair.

Simple or “Soft Dents”

These are dents that do not crease the sheet metal or damage the paint. These types of dents can be caused by low-speed parking lot encounters, a falling tree branch, a shopping cart or even hailstones.

Compound Dents

These are dents that crease the metal and crack the paint. In many cases, these types of dents do not affect the drivability of your vehicle, but the cracked paint will continue to cause rust and if left unattended, may reach a point where the entire body panel may need replacement. These types of dents can often be repaired using the original part on your car without requiring a new panel to be ordered.

Structural Damage & Dents

This type of dent goes beyond the simple “Fender Bender and the damage and often renders the vehicle undrivable. This type of damage may also involve frame or suspension damage. Often, these extended types of damage are not immediately apparent and the full extent is not discovered until the repair work has started.
